Are job ads in newspapers reduntant? March 18, 2008

According to a survey by Reed Employment only 3% of graduates look in newspapers for job opportunities, compared to 89% who look online.

Personnel Management: Graduates Only Search for Jobs Online

Quoting from the article:

Stephen Harrison, operations manager at Reed Graduates stated, “The Facebook generation of graduates clearly is more receptive to receiving information online than in print format. To attract top graduates, businesses will need to rethink the ways in which they recruit ensuring that online recruitment and perhaps even social networking sites are included. Equally, they may wish to introduce innovative new mediums such as video recruitment as part of their strategy.”

Of course not all Web 2.0 elements are appropriate for all organisations. Companies need to consider the aims of their recruitment campaign before investing time and money in new media, and look at past examples to see what has worked for other organisations. Yes, they are redundant but they aren’t useless. Whereas online job boards are the preferred way to find a job, they aren’t the surest. Typically, people desperate for a job become frustrated with the lack of responses they get from applying to online job postings, and revert back to the “tried and true.”
